Jam Buns are a must-try in Slovakia. Especially in small restaurants in villages. The jam buns are the traditional meals that every visitor of Slovakia has on the “must do” list. And a good thing is – you can make them at home.
I remember watching old-school Czechoslovak movies and how the atmosphere changed after someone there brought the jam buns. With the excitement of fresh jam buns on the table, people were arguing about who’s gonna get the last jam bun.
Jam buns were not very often on our table. There had to be some type of occasion to bring the old recipes into life. Like holidays, family reunions, or visiting my father’s grandma when I was a kid. I assure you, that jam buns are always a good idea.

How to make Grandma’s Jam Buns:
You can preheat the oven to 180°C now or do it later to save energy. Prepare a deep baking sheet.
Prepare a big cup with 200 ml of lukewarm milk. Add 1 tsp regular white sugar, 1 tsp flour, fresh yeast and let rise.
In another big bowl mix 900 g flour, 3 egg yolks, a pinch of salt, 6 g baking powder, the rest of the milk (300 ml), and yeast from the cup. Make a dough – in the middle of mixing the ingredients add oil or room temp butter. Place the dough in an oiled bowl and let it rest in a warm place. Let the dough rest until it doubles in size, usually about an hour.
Take it out of the bowl and roll out onto a lightly floured work surface. You should end up with a dough 45 x 30 cm. Cut the dough into 24 pieces. Fill every piece with a teaspoon of jam and fold it into the shape of a bun so the closed part is on the bottom of the bun.
Put oil on the bottom and sides of the baking sheet. Put buns on the baking sheet and brush the sides that are touching each other with oil. Cover the jam buns with a piece of cloth and let rest for 20 minutes.
Bake the jam buns for 20-30 minutes. Take them out of the oven and brush the tops with melted butter.
