Thick chocolate eggnog is a creamy, rich, and chilled beverage. We make it during the festive season when we eat Christmas desserts, drink cocktails, and don’t drive at all. You can eat it with just a teaspoon. You don’t have to add any alcohol (as I did), you can also make a non-alcoholic version.
Ingredients:
- 6 egg yolks
- 200 g icing sugar
- 400 g sweetened condensed milk
- 150 g melted chocolate
- 250 ml alcohol (rum, vodka)
Thick chocolate eggnog has been our family Christmas tradition for years. My grandma made this thick eggnog every year when we came over. We all sat around the table, chitchatting about random things and licking the chocolate eggnog from a shot glass.
What is chocolate eggnog?
Eggnog is a “milk punch” made out of eggs, milk, sugar, cream and alcohol. It’s a rich and sweetened beverage. You can also serve it as a hot beverage on cold days or add it to your cup of coffee.
In many countries is eggnog served as a Christmas dessert from November till the end of January. You can pour some brandy, rum, whisky or vodka into it.
How do we make thick chocolate eggnog?
I am not a huge fan of a classic version of eggnog. I don’t like runny milky beverages. This is my grandma’s recipe and she’s been using it for years. It has a little twist.
- condensed milk – condensed milk makes it sweet, and thick but also runny
- icing sugar – for the creamiest consistency
- melted chocolate – you can use milk chocolate if you prefer it, but I recommend using dark chocolate for cooking. It’s very rich in flavour and it works better
- let the chocolate eggnog chill – keep it in the fridge before it gets thick (at least 4 hours)
how to make thick chocolate eggnog:
Melt the chocolate over boiling water or in the microwave. Let cool completely.
In a bowl, whip the yolks with sugar at high speed until fluffy.
Add condensed milk, melted chocolate and alcohol. Whip until the sugar is completely dissolved. Give it a taste and add more alcohol if needed.
If you want this eggnog to be runnier, add pre-boiled milk. However, if you want the eggnog to be thick, leave it in a fridge for a few hours. If you added the exact same measurements, you get a thick chocolate eggnog.
