Greek Manestra (Orzo)

An easy recipe for Greek Manestra (Orzo).

Ingredients
  

  • 1 big onion
  • olive oil for cooking
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • tsp chilli flakes
  • ½ tsp oregano
  • tsp black pepper
  • tbsp granulated sugar
  • 250 g tomato sauce/puree
  • 200 g orzo
  • 1 l vegetable broth
  • a few leaves of fresh mint
  • 1 tsp cummin
  • parsley to garnish
  • 5 pink peppers
  • parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Chop up the onion into small cubes. Fry the onion on medium-low heat in olive oil. Fry until golden.
  • Add pink pepper and half the amount of the other spices. Add ground meat and cook until it gets brown. Add the rest of the spices and stir well.
  • Pour tomato sauce/puree into the pan and stir again. After 10 minutes of spices, meat and tomato sauce getting together, add vegetable broth and orzo.
  • Cook under the cover for 15-20 minutes. It depends on orzo - check if it's soft. In the end, garnish with mint leaves, parsley and add parmesan cheese.
